Unity Week: January 18th - 25th

Our sin of division as Christians

The Resurrection is at the centre of the Christian faith, without it there is no Christianity, however, almost every year Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox celebrate Easter on different dates, some years as much as five weeks apart and other years on the same date.

This division among Christians in celebrating this Feast of Feasts is a great sin and Christians all know that division does not come from God.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ!

We hope you all had a very blessed Christmas celebration and a good start to the year 2012.

As many of you would know, the Week of prayer for Christian unity is approaching (18th - 25th of January) and this is why we are getting in touch with you.

Almost every year Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox celebrate Easter on different dates, some years as much as five weeks apart. We think that all of us would agree that the Resurrection is at the centre of the Christian faith, without it there is no Christianity and we believe that this division among Christians in celebrating this Feast of Feasts is a great sin.

This is why a group of Christians from different denominations have taken the initiative to create a web page whose sole purpose it is to call for a unification of the Dates of Easter.

Mending this flagrant manifestation of disunity is not a matter of difficult doctrinal discussions. It is a matter of secular calendar dates. However, we believe it may be one of the most powerful steps toward deeper healing of memories, reconciliation and reunion.

What we ask from you is to make a special effort toward the unification of the Dates of Easter this Unity Week coming. We ask you to do so through your prayers - and by signing the petition, which is to be found on www.onedate.org. You can do so on-line or by printing the Petition Kit and bringing it along to your churches to be signed by the members of your congregation and than add their signatures on-line.

Please help us to make this small but as we believe a very important step toward unity this year.
