Rosa, deaf-mute from birth, suddenly cried out: “Mama!”

In 1754, Rosa Quinones, deaf-mute from birth, and her mother were sitting in a cave above the Guaitara River, near the city of Ipiales, Colombia near the border with Ecuador. Rosa suddenly cried out: "Mama, look at the Mestiza with the little Mestizo in her arms!"

Her mother saw nothing. A few days later, Rosa knelt down at the back of the cave in front of a mysterious image of the Madonna and Child, with Our Lady in a pink tunic covered with golden flowers, holding the Child with a white blanket with stars, about 41/2 ft high, painted on a flat stone.

Sometime later, Rosa fell ill and died. Her mother carried her daughter’s body to the image of the Virgin Mary in the cave... and obtained through her the resurrection of the child. So the mother, filled with joy, went to the town of Ipiales, woke up the inhabitants, who marveled at the miracle and rang the church bell in celebration.

Our Lady of "Las Lajas" is called "The Virgin of the Rocks" because the shrine is built on a rocky cliff. It is a place of pilgrimage for both Colombia and Ecuador, and was declared a national shrine in 1927.
